Oh, there were points I forgot to mention (I really can't write late night) I'm going to write down here. References — This one is a little tricky. I mostly use this (a lot ) on my stories, and sometimes I get carried away by being an awful easter bunny who likes to put easter eggs everywhere. Here's the thing: you can use references on your stories, as long you don't get carried away. It's preferable that you write your own idea, being creative, show something new, otherwise you'll turn your story into something that already exists, making uninteresting for the readers. Crossovers — This is also something I like to use a lot on my stories (there's a fan fiction I have to start writing with that). You can write a story where the main characters can meet other main character from other series (for example Steven Universe meets Uncle Grandpa? Eheh Ok, here's a better example. Disney Hercules meets Disney Aladdin). Or try to put an character on an existed universe (you can read my fan fiction Gadget in Wonderland to get the idea). Just make sure you don't get carried away here as well, because sometimes a series might not work with another. Or if you want to write a story with two or more characters from different series try to make it with a different plot, creating a new story with only those characters.

I'd say I'd agree with your clarifications.
I actually liked the pairing in IG 1, but I'd agree with you on IG2 and 2015. The problem there is that with both Gadget/G2 and Penny/Talon (and Gadget/Brenda, though I'm loathed to admit it) the makes didn't think about WHY these characters are together other than physical attraction. Physical attraction isn't bad, but it's a horrible way to start a relationship. There should at least be a scene where the characters express some non-attraction related interest in the other person.
As for self-insert romance, I'd agree. Especially the ones that insist Gadget is super handsome. (He's a sweetheart and a gentleman, but he's rather plain.)
As for references and crossovers, I'd agree. A lot of people do go crazy with those and they often don't make any sort of rhyme or reason.

I totally have to agree wth you copter, I liked the Brenda and Gadget pairing too but if you rewatch it, does it seem like claw likes brenda too? It makes sense that they shoud have some sort of related interest.... It would be abetter way to start a relationship! oh well TTYL, BRB Inspector TARDIS

I'm not going to lie, I used to like the Gadget and Brenda pairing, but after watching mr. Nostalgia Critic' critic about the movie and after rewatching the movie again I just felt it just screwed up with the rest of the story. There was a girl on DA (not going to mention her name) that wanted to do an RP game just about her romance with Gadget, but I stopped answering because I didn't feel comfortable with it. And no, it didn't turn out too fetish, like the girl wanted to have a scene with Gadget in bed, no. Eheh I just don't like these kinda stuff, because like I mentioned it seems these people don't know what real life means. Not to mention that Gadget is not... well... properly sexy. As for the references that's one of my issues. The only exceptions from my fics were probably Memories of an Inspector, which I used more a retell of some of my real life dramas from my childhood, especially the school times (which some exceptions here and there, of course ), and Gadget in Wonderland, which was a more cheatable story since I was using the entire Alice in Wonderland story but only with Gadget in it. The only ones I feel I didn't give my best were the Broken Heart and the Inspector Gadget - The Beginning ones, which were the ones I used a lot of references from other series I like and even other IG fan fictions that I enjoyed (mostly the Good Heart and A Mind of His Own ones). You guys, of course, who read my fics know that I like to use references, but I really want to see if at least I don't use them much as before. But since I write mostly for fun and not for professionalism I don't think it's a problem, but still... And as for the crossovers I had two in mind that I'm thinking on writing, but I'll probably going to give up on one, since the idea I had for that one has a lot of references from my favorite series, animes, mangas and video games. I'm just going to stick with the other fan fiction crossover, the My Top Five Favorite Character series, which although it might have some references here and there as well I want to make it a little more creative, at least I have some scenes ideas.

By the way, while writing this down, I just remember another point. This is something that even real professional writers mentioned. Use some of your real life moments — One of the things that writers pointed out is that the reason why Dragon Ball and Naruto are good is because the original manga writers used some of their real life moments, or even tragedies. This was something I didn't know But it's actually interesting because it's kind of true. Sure there are some good movies and series that are based on something existed (fairytales, for example), but using some moments of your life on your character can be way more interesting because it can turn into a good story. You don't technically need to tell the story of your life, just use some moments that probably marked on you That way you know you are writing with true feelings.
