Dear God! I'm so use to referring to him as John! Shit!...This is actually hard for me! I don't think I can get use to it!!! I know, it was a huge shocker for me too after close to 20 years calling him "John Brown" thanks to Disney. I'm having a hard time getting used to it too, but it's closer to the series's french origins. (I still think it's a pretty name for a guy)
I did look up the name "Augustin" and it's French and Romanian, and also it's "Austin" in the English translation.
however, maybe everybody used to call him "John" before his cyborg transformation because he hated his real name, lol! That could work too, I didn't even think about that! My husbands cousin (who my kids see like an uncle), goes by Rick, but his birthname is Ed. I never knew that until much, much later in life. I came across a piece of mail one time that had his name on it and I said, "Who the hell is Ed??" Then Rick said me! And I was like 'wait..What??' I thought he was pulling my leg or something. Then he goes to explain how he always hated his real name. So yeah! Maybe that could work for John as well. Hell I rather like that idea actually! Oh, one more thing! The only Austin I know is the former WWE wrester Stone Cold Steve Austin! I wanna see Gadget start 'stunning' some mother fuckin M.A.D. Agents, while shouting "OHHHH HELLLLL YEAH!!!!!" and flipping them off!!

I see what the creators did there! I have a theory that's who the original creators named Gadget after.
(but I could image Gadget having a smackdown on those MAD agents, LOL!)

(but I could image Gadget having a smackdown on those MAD agents, LOL!) I remember that show! Damn!..I was like really young when I last saw it though. It ran until 78...I was born in 78. So yeah...I was little! Still remember that music they played each time he used his bionic abilities! Damn that was classic! They should have used that for Gadget at least once, just to see if anyone who catch the reference! But your right, that is probably where they got his name from. Or was at least inspired by it. Still...I wanna see Gadget use the 'Stone Cold Stunner' on some poor M.A.D. Agent now though! Can't help myself...it's the wrestling fan in me!

Sadly, I vaguely remember it since I must've watched it a few times while channel surfing, but for some odd reason, I still remember his name after all of these years ever since. however, I do remember Stone Cold Steve Austin, a childhood friend was a huge fan of the wrestler and he had posters plastered all over his walls. lol!
that would've been awesome if they once mentioned Gadget's real name, the series was originally made for "nostalgia", that would've been a good reference since "The Six Million Dollar Man" was finished 5 years earlier.

Oh I understand fully! My BF had his walls plastered with Stone Cold as well during the 'attitude area', while I had The Undertaker plastered all over mine! Yeah, too bad they didn't do any refs towards it! It would have been really cool!

I used to watch (what was called) WWF with my neighborhood friends, and yes, the undertaker was bad A**.
yeah, but I do have a theory about one of the reasons why they had to drop the name because it was way too close to "Steve Austin". but at least we all know now after 35 years later.

I remember being surprised as well once I read the artbook. It's a nice name, just a shame they never used it in the series and later on they decided to change it. So thank you, Disney, for making us believing a lie. I mean there's nothing wrong with the name John Brown and I'm sure there might have been a reason why they changed the name, otherwise DiC wouldn't have put the name we already got used to in the collectible cards, but it's such a shame. I prefer the name Augustin since it's not very common knowing a lot of people with that name, feels kind of original, while John is a name that's already used in most people, kinda gets unoriginal, but that's just me.

I agree, I really, really do like the name because it dose suit him, it's very different and unique... just like he is.
I actually was talking to the person who translated the book for me about the name "John Brown" and he states that the name was used a lot in "old fashioned stories", so it was quite common in literature and screenplay.
As for Disney, I'm very disappointed in them too, after close to 20 years, everybody in the fandom used that name for their fanfictions, webcomics and headcanons... I just feel bad for them who are caught by surprise.
