So I was recently watching one of my favorite reviewers, the Mysterious Mr. Enter, and he did a majorly negative review on the Teen Titans Go episode, The Return of Slade. I'll be up front, I despise Teen Titans Go. The original Teen Titans isn't really my thing, either, but Go practically spits in the face of all thing good cartoon. The animation is lazy and childish, the characters are dispicable, and even if the old show wasn't my thing, the way the new so completely disregards anything that comes before it is horrible bad.
The episode in question is especially bad. The titual villain never shows up, making the title a lie! After that, what does the cartoon become? A take that against critics who argue that Go is a stupid show and more effort needs to be put into it. Using clowns to represent cartoons, they essentially say that kids are stupid, their programming should be stupid, and any teens and adults who like cartoons need to grow up and watch something else! What a rancid moral!
On top of it, I've seen others who have made similar decries. I saw one reviewer who said Zootopia was too dark for kids considering that the tones of racism and the inclusions of drugs. Personally, I think those complaints are bunk and Zootopia was a fine kids films.
But it begs the question: how dark is too dark. You guys probably already know this, the FanFiction I'm working on, ReInitiated, will be somewhat darker than canon. However, I do want to work to keep a lot of the humor alive, too, and balance out the two elements.
I think that balance is what is necessary for a good reimagining. It's where a show like Batman: The Animated Series or the Spectacular Spider-Man succeeds, and where a show like Loonatics Unleashed or Teen Titana Go fails hard.
What do you think?
