Welcome, traveler, I am pleased to see you have come to my table. The barkeep tells me you wish to hear one of my stories, is this true? Ahhhh, so it is.... and you seek to hear my story of thew famous Gadget? Well, I do believe I have a story you might be interested in, regarding that most remarkable hero made of flesh, iron and steel. Mayhaps this tale will capture your fancy?
Now, this is indeed the story of the remarkable man you call Gadget, fighting against injustice... but it is not the story you know, and not with the players you remember. This tale comes from another time and place, and from a world very different from the one other Gadget tales are set in. This is a world where man has lost the battle against nature, and has now been cast adrift on the seas of fate. And how Gadget found himself a stranger in a strange land....
Sunset... she always hated sunset. To her, it meant another day wasted, and very little accomplished when there was so much to be done. People have so very little time in there lives to achieve anything, yet they were always wasting the precious gift that is time, instead of treasuring it like the scarce resource it was. Oh, how she would make good use of the time that others wasted, if she could make it her own!
"Miss Penny, we're ready to lower the crane again!" One of the crew members called out to their captain up on the deck. "I thought you might want to be down here when we bring the next load up!"
"Coming right down, Ragas!" Penny called down to him, making her way over to the cargo hold. "Make sure Fidget and Digit don't' wreck the crane first."
It wasn't an easy line of work, leading the crew of one of the many sky ships that flew over the surface of this world. But it was the most adventurous life someone could ask for, in this day and age. When she had been a little girl, her mother had told her tales of a time when people had lived on the surface of the planet, it cities and through the countryside. But that was before the surface had become one big toxic river of slime, poisoned by what the elders called man's folly. Now, all of humanity dwelled on the mountaintops, while brave crews wandered across the sea of poison in great vessels such as hers.
"Fidget, go ahead and send the crane down." Penny told her ship's mechanic, the high heels of her black leather boots clicking on the wooden steps as she descended. "Let's see what kind of haul we can bring up from the surface this time."
"Aye aye, Captain Dreadful." The dark-sinned sailor with a bandanna replied, slowly turning his head towards his superior officer.
Fidget and Ragas Mari, the two male crew members present, turned to stare at the twenty-three year old captain... and with good reason. Captain Penelope Dreadful was one of the most beautiful and elegant captains sailing on the sea of Poison; her long blonde hair kept in perfect pigtails, and she was dressed in a Gothic knee length skirt and knee-high stockings trimmed all in black lace. Still, the cutlass and pistol she kept tucked in her belt told everybody she meant business, and all of her crew made certain not to stare for too long before returning to their work.
There was a loud whir, as the massive chain and metal winch was lowered down into the sea of poison, going down through the thick morass of slime. the giant pulley continued to lower into the abyss, for nearly an hour, before Penny began to lose her patience.
"Digit, are you certain this is where the map said we'd find the treasure?" She asked impatiently. "I really hope we're not wasting our time out here!"
"Sure as I can be, captain!" The Asian looking woman in cargo pants, goggles, and a striped tank top replied, studying the ancient parchment in her hands. "The merchant who sold me this map assured me it lead directly to the spot an ancient hero fought a great battle long ago, and that his treasures still lie at the bottom of the sea of poison!"
Penny fell silent, and began to pace the cargo hold in deep thought. It certainly was a risk coming out this far, so deep into hostile territory. But she and her crew were professional scavengers, sailing out upon the sea of poison, and salvaging anything valuable they could find. If this little excursion could turn up anything valuable, old man Quimby would pay a fortune for it back on Riverton island. They'd be set for life!
"Whatever we're doing, we'd better do it fast!" Ragas added nervously, stroking his goatee. "We're in Mad-Monger territory, and I don't want to think what Captain Claw and his pirate crew would do if they found us!"
It was at that moment, that the cargo crane hit the sea floor with a loud THUD! The metal claw grappled into something, and the crane automatically began to tug against a heavy weight.
"There's something down there!" Captain Dreadful exclaimed excitedly. "Fidget, pull it up!"
"Aye, captain!" The engineer replied, pulling a lever. The stain began to haul the heavy weight towards the surface, nearly buckling under the load. Every gear and turbine in the steam powered vessel seemed to groan under the weight, as the salvage crane pulled a large chunk of ice straight up into the cargo hold.
"Hey, take a look inside that big rock!" Ragas Mari exclaimed. "There's somebody inside that rock!"
Sure enough, Penny saw a man inside the frozen block, wearing a strange tan coat and hat, with black hair sticking out on either side of his head. as the rest of the crew pulled the icy chunk into the cargo hold, Captain Dreadful could stare at the frozen figure in wonder.
"That man... could he be an ancient?" Fidget asked in awe. "From the time our ancestors lived on the surface?"
"More important... could he still be alive in there?" Digit chimed in, as she stared at the frozen fellow with a small smile. "I'm sure hope so, he looks really cute."
"It doesn't matter; all that's important is we found something valuable, now let's get out of here." Penny motioned to the crew to get back on deck. "Let's get topside and sail out of these MAD-infested waters, and give this cool customer time to thaw out." Captain Dreadful started up the stairs. After he warms up, we'll turn the body over to Dr. Heather in the Medic bay, and see if he's worth anything."
But as she and her crew went topside, Penny could've shake the feeling the frozen man wasn't exactly dead...
