hi everyone! well, a couple of weeks ago I was looking around ebay France for an item and I came across these french movie posters for the original series! I never thought that the original IG had his own cartoon movie poster, but not just 1, but 3! and it translates "the secret folders of the Inspector Gadget finally revealed us cinema" and they had the original DiC logo on them.
I couldn't help but snatch these up! I bought the 2 only because I really love the artwork on them and they are small enough for me to frame sometime soon. (even though, they are very long) but the 3rd one would've taken up my entire wall, so I just pass on it.
well, I have researched the history of these and it turns out in 1986, they used 4 episodes of the 2nd season, made it movie length and showed it in selected theaters in France for a limit time. now, it makes me wonder what episodes did they use since the majority of the 2nd season did tied together. I tried to look for more information about it, but this all what i learned.... so far.

Anyways, I just wanted to share these, it's very cool that the original series was shown in theaters before the Disney movie that came out 13 years later.

Thanks for sharing!! thanks! i don't normally collect movie posters, but this was a must have! the colors are very bright in person, who ever done it was on point!
now i wish they released the movie on DVD... even if it's in french. lol! (i think Gadget's voice was cute in french)
however, i'm on a facebook group called "cartoon research" and i was asking everybody about them and somebody mentioned that DiC made something similar with Heathcliff here in the U.S. around that year.

Good find! I wonder if it could be the same as this UK VHS "movie" that was released in the late 80s (under the title The Inspector Gadget Movie: Go Gadget)? (Note: this is from ebay rather than my personal collection, and I have never owned nor watched this I'm afraid) If so it seems from the blurb like the episodes would have been Crashcourse in Crime, Gadget Meets the Clan, Gadget and Old Lace and Gadget and the Red Rose. What complicates this slightly is that Tempo Video seemed to have a weird practice of making their own "movies" out of DIC cartoons and releasing them on VHS, for example they made a M.A.S.K. movie by crudely stitching the first four or so episodes of the second season. More pertinently, as mentioned above, there is a fairly well known Heathcliff: The Movie that was released in US Cinemas, which I saw here in the 90s on Sky Movies, which linked seven DIC Heathcliff cartoons with some wrap-around sequences of Heathcliff and his nephews. However, for whatever reason, Tempo Video released their own, different, Heathcliff "movie" on VHS, (called The Heathcliff Movie: Heathcliff and Me) featuring a different 7 or 8 episodes and much cheaper, briefer, more simplistic linking footage. I'm not sure why they did this, my only guess would be rights (as far as I can tell the more famous Heathcliff movie has never been released in the UK). Given this, I wouldn't be confident that the French and UK movies were the same, but as they would have both represented the European market, it's not impossible either.

I think it's pretty cool that they made these movies out of a bunch of episodes that tie in together. I honestly wish I could watch the IG movie just to see how well they blended in the episodes together, I don't think there was ever a U.S. release on VHS but I think it's very interesting that it made it to the U.K. As for Heathcliff, I have never heard of it until recently and it makes me wonder how well did it do in theaters, along with IG in France.

The Heathcliff movie made $2.6million in the US, which was not a lot even in 1986, but given that it must have been pretty cheap to produce (there's probably about 5 minutes of new footage in the whole thing, and it's no more elaborate than the animation in a normal episode, less in some ways) and that it was apparently only shown at matinee screenings, they might have been reasonably happy it.
I can't find anything substantial about the Gadget movie unfortunately. My guess is that it was a fairly limited release, but unlike in the US where almost no hand-drawn animated films outside of Disney or Spielberg/Bluth did well until the late 90s, there were some other animated movies in France that did pretty well at the time (e.g. Asterix, Lucky Luke), so you never know.

I wonder if the stitched episode movie was released first before the half an hour episodes were aired on Television. I guess that will be a mystery.

The only thing I've found (which you may well have already seen) suggests it was released in France on 8th April 1987. animeland.fr/dossier/les-longs-metrages-d-animation-en-france-au-cinema/ Given that the first season supposedly aired in France only a month after it aired in the US my guess is the second season would have aired in France by then, but that's just a guess.

Thank you so much for the link, I don't remember seeing this site unless I pass by it a couple of years ago. Sadly I wasn't able to open the link for more info since there might be something wrong with the site but at least it's good to know that it's been listed along with other movies they premiered. Hopefully some time in the future someone out there will have more information about it... And hopefully a video.

You're welcome, sorry you can't open the link, it's just a list of release dates for animated movies in France so it doesn't have any other relevant information. I tried to find out if the film had been released on VHS in France, but if it was I couldn't find anything about it. Yes, hopefully more will turn up in the not too distant future, but just knowing that some vintage IG played in theatres is pretty cool

Anyways, I just wanted to share these, it's very cool that the original series was shown in theaters before the Disney movie that came out 13 years later. Wowzers! I’m jealous! The posters look excellent.. something about the way the French adapt things seems very creative and artistic. The artwork on these posters also have a bit of a creepy vibe, particularly that first one, with the eye-holes cut into the newspaper. I’m really into it
