So a Talenny fan put up a debate format argument for Talenny, and I put up a response. I thought you might want to see it:
Her points: m.fanfiction.net/s/12462086/1/
My points:
I realize I am going to be radically disagreed with by the majority of the people who read this, but as you are writing this in a debate format, I will provide you with a debate partner. Now, I suppose you have never ready my story, so I will allow you to know that I do like Talon as a character, but I do not like him as a love interest. I will be arranging why according to your points, and I have read your points and will be addressing.
Also, my version of Talon is different from his canon version. I will be applying this to Talon's canon version only, not my version.
1. Ship name
I'm sorry, but this is completely unimportant. In real life, a lot of married and dating people have wonderful married live, yet no ship name. Besides, a lot of people find shipping names to be irritating and shallow, and people with paring names can end up crashing and burning.
2. Appearances
I will give you that Talon makes more appearances in 2015 than William did in Gadgetinis, but what happens in that appearance is more important than the number. Quality overrides quantity, so to speak. In Gadgetinis, the one time William appeared showed him getting along well with Penny, established common interests, and placed them both on the same side of the morality spectrum. In 2015, the many appearances of Talon only show him and Penny either trying to pound each other or giggling like Kindergartners with a crush. Not to mention Talon has attempted to kill both Gadget and Brain, something William never did.
3. Good girls like Bad boys
Once again, this is based on a faulty assumption. There are many, many good girls who despise bad boys. I realize "I can fix him" mentalities are a thing, but they are an unhealthy thing. Bad boys are rarely ever fixed, and relationships like that are almost always doomed to end in cheating, lies, and divorce, especially when the girl is good. Bad boys may be fun to date, but if Penny would stay in that relationship, she'd be doomed to heartbreak.
Not to mention Talon's tried to murder Penny's family. That in and of itself should be a turn-off.
4. Stories
I'll skip the DC stuff, since I'm not familiar with it.
As for stories, once again, this is unimportant. All you are stating is what happens to be more popular at a time, not which relationship is healthier. True, Talenny stories are a dime a dozen, but that also means most of them are rather poorly written. Once again, quantity does not mean quality.
Also, your count is a little bit wrong. There are at least two stories that pair Penny/William: My own, ReInitiated, which I admit you probably wouldn't like, and an older story called Gadget's Lucky Penny. Both have William as Penny's love interest, and Talon is even a major character in ReInitiated. So, while William/Penny stories are fewer than Talenny ones, they still exist.
5. Meetings
I hate to admit this to you, but as popular it is, love at first sight does not exist. Infatuation at first sight, maybe, but not love. Love needs to be grown slowly through mutual respect, common interests, and a genuine delight of being around each other. Turning into a giggling moron because the other person is attractive may be cute for a view, but it's a terrible way to start a relationship.
6. Closeness
Now I disagree fervently here. Penny's heartbreak in 2015 was not a sign of a break in closeness, but disappointment in finding out her infatuation was misplaced. She could not be close to Talon because she had only known him for about 5-10 minutes. As I said earlier, love, and by connection closeness, is grown over a long time. Actually, he response to William (who she had known for about 2 hours by that point) showed more closeness since she trusted that he was himself, and not his uncle.
7. First sight
Once again, that was infatuation, not love. I won't repeat myself since I've already made this point.
8. Forbidden love
Once again, this a cliche that is so popular that no one realizes how stupid it is.
I know most people don't understand this, but Romeo and Juliet is not a romance; it is a cautionary tale about deciding to marry someone too fast. Romeo is rebounding off of being rejected by Rosaline, so he hooks up with the first pretty girl he meets. Juliet is in love with the idea of an older man loving her. They both foolishly marry each other without knowing each other, and it lead not only to their own deaths and the deaths of others. This is not a love story, and it is not a story to model other relationships off of.
You need to think of why the rules are in place. True, Penny and Talon find each other attractive, but is this enough to make her good with the fact that he's an attempted murderer? If so, what does that day about her?
I have other points for why I support Penny/William over Penny/Talon, but these are my responses to you specific points. If you, or anyone else, would like to discuss this further, feel free to PM me.
Now, once again, I think Talon is a good character. I like the idea of Penny having an opponent who a match for her talents, and is for Claw what she is for Gadget. I just think making him a love interest messes with the otherwise great dynamic.
Just my thoughts.-SWW
