Yeah, I know that 8Tracks is dead for some time, but the tips this YouTuber gives is still relevant.
If one takes the fact that the best fanmix must be based on the music of which the character(s) would like to listen, rather than the music oneself prefers, how would you handle this methodology?
I know that 1999!IG would most likely listen to pop music that was current at that time (eg. “All Stars” by Smash Mouth), but what kind of music genre would 1983!IG would listen to based on what we know from the actual canon?
EDIT: okay, I have some sort of headcanon from this episode... Much for the fact that his theme song is based on actual classical music, Gadget has a penchant for it too; pop music is complete Greek for him. btw seeing him playing the cello ironically reminded of Shinji from Evangelion XD RE-EDIT: hearing him say that that the harp is his fav instrument (either both for playing and/or listening) struck a cord to me (pun intended); he’d definitely be friends with Amy Farrah Fowler!

I'd do this if I wasn't afraid of getting my work flagged by YouTube's system over content. Yes, I know many people upload stuff all the time, and to that I'm glad for it! I just hope the stuff is never taken down.
Honestly when I read the note to 8Tracks before seeing the video which kept buffering even on hot spot. I thought you meant the old media format at first. I have to say the closest I've given this thought wasn't over canon content. When I think of a music fan mix to IG it's my own writing, the "soundtrack" if you could all it that of all the royalty free music I've used in the background to the audio book adaptions. I hear that music and think of story moments due to the difficult editing I've had to do with it, syncing it to what is being said.

I've never heard of 8Tracks until you bought this up, I did peak into the website on my phone and it seems like just putting together a random playlist with descriptions, interesting that this became a thing at one time. I often wondered about this too since it was hardly ever bought up in the series on what type of music Gadget liked, but at least it was hinted in the episode which it did lean towards "classical" which a lot of people do enjoy. Meanwhile, Like you said, he did "played" the cello at the most part and he also owns a grande piano up in his attic along with that it looks like a huge collection of records or sheet music. (or it can be both)
I wonder if Gadget likes other types of music too, like that scene when Rick Rocker was in the gadgetmobile and asked Gadget to put on the radio and you guys know the rest. lol! but the music that they choose sounded like a mix between pop, jazz or even Latino. (it was kinda of a weird mix to make it out on what it is, but maybe somebody out there might know more about it ) but it seems like Gadget loves all different types, but when it comes to the "new music"... sometimes I feel the same when it comes to "I've never heard of them".
When it comes to Penny and her taste of music, you need to think what type of music was very poplar in 1983, like pop, rock, heavy metal and country. As for Rick Rocker, we only had short clips on what kind of music he plays. it seems like it's more towards "Pop Rock" or just "Rock and Roll" even though the character designers gave him goofy clothes, but it was 1983, it was a different world. lol! however, I do see Penny as a "head banger" and loving rock music, lol! Same with Brain since he rocks out when he hears Rick Rocker on Penny's radio.
For choosing what type of music she would enjoy, there is a good variety of rock music from 1983. - The Police
- Def Leppard
- Duran Duran
- ZZ Top
And I'm sure they are many other types of music that both Gadget, Penny and Brain do enjoy, too bad they only had 1 episode in the original series that only bring up this topic.
Honestly when I read the note to 8Tracks before seeing the video which kept buffering even on hot spot. I thought you meant the old media format at first. Lol! I thought the same thing too, kinda ironic that they still used the technology in 1983.
