Here's a thought that came to me: what if Gadget's not just stupid, but he might have one or more undiagnosed learning disorders that are holding him back? That could explain a lot of his actions.

I am not sure of that.
We don't know everything about his family.
a mention of any illnesses mental or not was never mentioned. So we would have to make those assumptions our selfs.

A learning disorder isn't necessarily a mental illness. It's just something that keeps someone from being able to process certain materials, and there is no known cause.
That seems to describe Gadget's case to me.

There's was a thread where we also discuss about this, but it was mostly because of Penny.
I actually thought that Gadget could possibly suffer of Asperger Syndrome, an autism that makes people have problem socializing with others, until my psychologist said "no" and he's just a normal guy who just act like a fool.
However, I still think he does have something like that. I mean the way how he reacts to the world is so distract and naive, which is also normal for someone who suffers of Asperger Syndrome. I'm only saying this because I do myself have this problem and most of the time I don't know myself what's really happening around me.

I'd have to agree with your psychologist and say it's probably not Aspergers. That said, Aspergers is not a learning disability. It falls on the Autism-Spectrum, which is another category entirely. Learning disabilities are conditions like Dyslexia or Dyscalculia (which is like Dyslexia, but with math). Similar to the Autism-Spectrum, we don't know what causes a learning disability, but unlike Autism, it doesn't typically have an effect on social interactions, only learning. I would suppose Gadget falls more in here, since most of his problems falls to stupidity rather than social awkwardness. I'll admit, I don't fall on the Autism-Spectrum, but one of my favorite online reviewers, The Mysterious Mr. Enter, has Aspergers and he doesn't show any of Gadget's intellect problems. His analysis of movies and tv shows does not suggest any intellectual issues, such as the ones Gadget has.

I HC him with adult ADD/ADHD. He is pretty dumb but he is not stupid. When he is focused, we all know how scary that can be. The problem is he often just seems to be staring off or not listening. He doesn't seem the type to dwell on that or even consider being medically treated for it. If that'd even work with his mods. So yeah, I think this is just Gadget having a VERY short attention span.

Gadget not being stupid was actually mentioned in the book Go Go Gadget the creation of Inspector Gadget by Andy Hayward, page 10 however, He is suffering from something which I would've think some sort of brain damage from the accident and also adult ADD/ADHD on top of that. he the majority of the time seems to loose focus and once when something happens to him, he seems act very quickly and becomes more resourceful to save everybody that he loves and also himself.
There is a fan theory out there that he was once a very smart man before he turn into a cyborg. (you can really see it in season 1 where you see he has a lot of education diplomas and graduation portraits hanging on the walls, rewards and metals all over his house including a lot of books) however, it all seemed to change after his accident. but his true self comes out at once when he needs to.
yeah, you would've think he is pretty dumb, but he's not stupid.... he's just not focused.

I don't think anyone truly knows what goes on in his head. Even him. But yeah that ADD thing is real. Get this man a snack so he can focus more. We need more focused Gadget. Let him prove himself. <3

I honestly wish the writers did on that subject, Gadget really needs a bit of a "character improvement".

(That I can't wait to see in your comic! )

As a person with autism, I don't think that any of the characters, outside of maybe Penny, has that condition. I've always thought that the last thing that Gadget before the explosion or whatever happened (the idea of him slipping on a banana peel is just insultingly stupid and seems like a missed opportunity) saw was the MAD symbol. Maybe his brain simply cannot process this symbol so he never sees it. It would be tragically ironic if Brain was the one who unintentionally brought in the hidden bomb (Penny could have trusted her instincts and saved him but didn't do anything) that caused the Gadget to becoming his bionic-self. That would explain why he and Penny are so overprotective of their uncle, they might blame themselves for what happened to him.
He might have been a genius Detective before his subsequent brain damage and only pretended to be stupid in order to make his enemies underestimate him. Presumably, his brain damage may have been discovered only after the emergency surgery that transformed him into a cyborg. Everyone involved was embarrassed for this oversight and it was covered up by Chief Quimby. At least that is my headcanon.

That's an interesting theory. Did you ever continue working on that fan fiction you were talking about a while back?

I might end up finishing it. I finally just Soros gave up and decided to make Atsuko's uncle a Kamen Rider type character even though I was trying to avoid that. At least that's what I remembered, I might just give him removable gadgets or something like that to contrast the inspector.
I'm currently working on an idea for an episode guide relating to a non-existent Inspector Gadget 90s anime.
