In this thread the subject of How dark is too dark addressed when does content become well too dark or grim for what it's normally thought to be. My question here is how do you if you do try to, keep the toning of the story still in line with being ok for a younger audience? I know my work crosses that line some times where a child would be advised not to read what I've written. A matter which visually in description or actual pictures has come up. But I try to remember what things are to canon. Watching from comic born TV shows & likewise. Remembering styles presented by some authors famous for that genre.

Honestly, in my opinion, dark isn't a problem with kids stories, provided there's a happy ending. Look at the classic works of Don Bluthe for proof of that.
What is problematic with kid stories is how graphic the darkness is. I'd say, you can keep darkness in a kid's story if:
A. There is a happy ending B. All violent content is toned down so as not to be graphic. (I specify violence because I believe sex shouldn't go farther than Disney level in a kid show.)
Kids are smarter than a lot of people give them credit for. As long as nothing is graphic, they can usually understand and enjoy a well thought out story with a dramatic plot.

I agree with Gogogadgetcopter.
If you see the Don Bluth movies like he mentions there's a lot of dark moments, way more darker than Disney itself.
And lets not forget Batman Animated Series, Teen Titans and SatAM Sonic the Hedgehog, which are also kids cartoons but with a lot of dark stuff, especially Batman.
There's nothing wrong on putting some dark stuff in a story/argument, in fact that makes the story way more interesting and stronger.
Look for example Steven Universe too, which started like a "bad" comedy but then got dark themes and turned out great.

Ok, now I'm feeling bad for wanting to keep an element of lightness present.
